Valley of Thor Experience

A 2 day Arctic Truck adventure to the Þórsmörk valley. Including a fun drive between two glaciers on rutted tracks and crossing few unbridged glacier rivers. This is the perfect place to see the Northern lights in the winter time!
We offer two versions of this tour, driver guided or you can do the driving, accompanied by our guide.

If you prefer a driver guided version of this tour, no problem. It is bookable as well.

Description

A two day Arctic Truck adventure to the Þórsmörk valley. A beautiful scenery on the way, for example where the glacial flood came down during the 2010 eruption in Eyjafjallajökull volcano. Arctic Trucks Experience offers guided self-drive tours in the amazing highlands in Iceland.

We take the main road east through the mountains of Helliðsheiði plateau and drive along the south coast. The south part of Iceland is the biggest agriculture area on the island. On the way we will see for example greenhouses, dairy farms and sheep farms. The first stop is at the popular sight Seljalandsfoss waterfall where the brave ones can take a walk behind the waterfall as it falls from the very high cliffs.

From the waterfall, we will continue our way into Þórsmörk and drive between three glaciers, Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull. The route has rutted tracks and unbridged glacier rivers. It is impossible to reach the valley on a regular vehicle, the guide teaches you how to cross rivers and why we need to deflate the tires of the truck on the way.
In Þórsmörk valley we make stops at Gígjökull outlet glacier and Stakkholtsgjá canyon to explore its hidden waterfall if the weather conditions allow us.
We end the day at one of the mountain huts in the valley for a BBQ dinner and a cozy overnight stay in the huts.

During the second day, we will start to make our way out of Þórsmörk, scenic stops will be made on the way. The challenge for the day is to drive up to the glacier Eyjafjallajökull and try to get as close as possible to the top. How far we can go depends on the weather and conditions on the glacier.
After the glacier experience, we head back to Reykjavík and if time allows us we will do more exciting driving before we get to the city.

Arctic Trucks Experience

Only few people have had the opportunity to sit behind the wheel of a powerful 4x4 in one of the world’s most unique places. Arctic Trucks has now made it possible to experience the remote areas of Iceland in guided self-drive tours, driving cars like those used in the well-known BBC television show Top Gear, in their journey to the Magnetic North Pole.
