Our Landmannalaugar Super Jeep Tour is the perfect way to explore this unique area, renowned for its colorful rhyolite mountains, natural hot springs, and rugged landscape.
The journey to Landmannalaugar takes us through some of Iceland’s most scenic and dramatic landscapes, including lava fields, highland planes, mountains, and rivers. Our specially modified super jeep is designed to navigate Iceland’s rugged terrain, so you can sit back and enjoy the journey while taking in the stunning views.
The first stop of the day will be Hjálparfoss Waterfall. A good opportunity to stretch our legs a little bit after the drive from Reykjavik. Hjálparfoss is a beautiful waterfall located in southern Iceland, known for its unique two-streamed cascade that meets at the base to form a serene pool. The name Hjálparfoss translates to “help waterfall” in Icelandic, and it is said to have gotten its name from the fact that it provided a much-needed source of fresh water for travelers and their horses in the past. Surrounded by stunning natural scenery and accessible via a short hike, Hjálparfoss is a popular destination.
As we approach the highlands, we will make time to soak in the raw natural beauty of both Sigöldufoss Waterfall and the spectacular Sigöldugljúfur Canyon, often labeled the “Valley of Tears“. The Sigöldufoss waterfall was formerly a segment of the glacial river Tungnaá. Over centuries, a sizable amount of glacial water made its way downstream, bringing with it all the mud, ashes, soil, small rocks, and other materials to the shore.
But, when the Sigalda Power Station was built and glacial water from the river was redirected into a tunnel to power the hydroelectric turbines. What was left was a little river, which mostly turned into spring water and just so happened to be multitudes more scenic than the previous, muddy waterfall.
Sigöldugljúfur was once a low profile canyon hidden away from curious eyes even though the mountain road to Landmannalaugar runs right past it. Before the times of hydroelectric power, the canyon was filled with the brown water of the glacial river flowing through the area. After the powerplant was built, in the same way as with the Sigöldufoss Waterfall, the canyon revealed itself with a multitude of serene and relatively clear waterfalls falling off of it’s cliffs.
Soon we will arrive in Landmannalagar. Once there, we will trek through the Laugahraun lava field, a unique landscape created by a volcanic eruption that occurred around the year 1477. We’ll also explore the Vondugil canyon, one of Landmannalaugar’s most stunning geological features, and a place where you can truly feel the power of nature.
One of the highlights of our Landmannalaugar Super Jeep Tour is the opportunity to see the area’s colorful rhyolite mountains up close. The mountains’ unique colors, ranging from deep red to bright green and yellow, are caused by the presence of different minerals in the rocks. The mountains are a photographer’s dream, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to capture some incredible shots on this tour.
