The cars
In April 2007 Arctic Trucks undertook what nobody had done before: Going to the Magnetic North Pole by car! This was an expedition organized by BBC's television show Top Gear, associated by Toyota GB and Arctic Trucks. Arctic Trucks modified two Toyota Hilux and a Toyota Land Cruiser and had three men participating in the gruelling, adventurous 7-days race, over 1000 km.
Some of the cars we are offering in our self-drive tours are the actual cars that went on this challenging trip to the Magnetic Pole with Top Gear. Others are similar cars, modified according to our experience from other expeditions, such as Antarctica 2008. When modifying cars for extreme conditions, like the Magnetic Pole or Antarctica, we build on our experience of travelling in Iceland. All the cars used in the self-drive tours are modified for either 38" or 44" tyres so they are ready for all circumstances met in the tough highlands of Iceland.
All vehicles are equipped with a front and rear airlocking system in the differentials, air compressor, a GPS navigation system, VHF radios, tyre repair equipment and other equipment needed for the specified tour. All the cars also have a recovery kit with shovels, a high lift jack and kinetic rope. On each convoy travelling there is at least one winch, a snow anchor and a snatch-block.
